VMM 2008R2SP1 to VMM 2012SP1

We have VMM 2008 R2 on a WS 2008 R2 SP1 physical server using a SQL express database.

I need to upgrade to VMM 2012 SP1.

This is a summary of my plan:

1. Backup VMM database, uninstall VMM 2008 R2 (retain data) and WAIK
2. Create an instance for VMM on our System Centre SQL 2012 server and restore the VMM backup
3. Do an in place upgrade of the VMM server to WS2012
4. Install ADK 8
5. Install VMM 2012 SP1 selecting option to choose existing database

My concern is the database can't be upgraded from VMM2008R2 to VMM2012SP1 directly but instead required to go to VMM 2012 then to VMM2012SP1?

I can't find any documentation stating this isn't possible, but I also can't see anything advising it can be done.
